Youth of Color Empowerment Day - Friday, April 30, 10am-Noon

April 20, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

The MEChA chapter at HSU and the Office of Admissions would like to inform you that Youth of Color Empowerment Day will be offered virtually Friday, April 30th from 10am to noon. Youth of Color Empowerment Day is a student-driven event, planned and facilitated by students involved in MEChA and other student clubs and supported by HSU’s Office of Admissions. This year, the student lead for the event is Anayeli Auza, a senior at HSU majoring in Spanish and Math.

Youth of Color Empowerment Day will include a student panel, student-led workshops, a keynote presentation by Dr. Sarah Ramirez, and a conversation with cultural center staff and students. To participate, high school students, family members and educators need to register by Monday, April 26th.

The event’s keynote speaker, Dr. Sarah Ramirez, is the daughter of a Mexican immigrant farm working family. Ramirez was born and raised in the small town of Pixley, CA and earned her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Stanford University. Noting the high rates of diabetes and obesity in Tulare County fused with food insecurity, unemployment and poverty, she opted to forego a promising career as an epidemiologist and returned instead to Pixley to start a grassroots organization to improve the quality of life for those most vulnerable in and around her home community.

A special thank you to the following clubs and departments for their involvement in the event: AACAE, DMSI Scholars, EOP, El Centro, Gear Up, ITEPP, MEChA, Office of Admissions, Office of Enrollment Management, Office of Financial Aid, PromotorX Transformative Educators, SJEIC, TRiO Educational Talent Search, TRiO Upward Bound, and the Women’s Resource Center.
