Welcome to Alt Text April!

April 6, 2023

All during this month, Accessible Technology, and the Accessibility Faculty Fellows will be providing resources, training, and tips to help the campus provide alternative text for images and graphics that are sent out in email, included in course documents, embedded in flyers and newsletters, posted on webpages and sent out in social media messages.

Alternative (Alt) text is a short description of an image conveying how it relates to the content of a document or webpage. It is read aloud by screen readers and indexed by search engines. It also replaces the image if it does not load.

Missing alt text is one of the top accessibility issues we see in digital content across campus. It is not difficult to add alt text so that everyone can access your content. Alt text is best added by those with an understanding of the context of the image (such as the content creators themselves).

Join us all this month in helping to make your content more accessible to all starting with this simple step.
