BUSY WEEKEND AHEAD OF LUMBERJACK ATHLETICS

Three of the five Humboldt State Fall Athletic Teams will be home this weekend in volleyball, men’s soccer and women’s soccer.  Humboldt State’s cross country teams will be participating in the Mike Johnson Classic at Ash Creek Preserve in Monmouth, Ore., this Friday, September 24.  Women’s race to begin at 5pm with the men’s race to follow at 5:45pm. 

 This Friday evening, HSU’s volleyball team will have its home opener when the ‘Jacks face Stanislaus State at 5pm at Lumberjack Arena.  Then on the following day, men’s and women’s soccer teams along with the volleyball team will be hosting Chico State.  Action to begin at College Creek Field with the men’s soccer match at 12:30pm to follow down at the pitch at 3pm with the women’s soccer match.  The volleyball match will begin at 5pm at Lumberjack Arena.

 GRANADOS AND BURTON LEAD HSU CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS TO SECOND PLACE FINISH

Both of the Humboldt State men’s and women’s cross country teams finished in second place in the Jim Hunt Invitational at Baywood Golf & Country Club in Arcata this past rainy Saturday morning.  Rosa Granados ran a first place time of 23:14.99 to lead the way for the Lumberjack women in the 6K race. Over in the men’s race, Shane Burton finished in fifth place with his time of 26:45.47 in the 8K race.

 MEN’S SOCCER STAY HOT WITH FIFTH STRAIGHT SHUTOUT VICTORY

Humboldt State improved to 5-0 with a 1-0 victory over Simpson in the Lumberjacks’ home opener this past Friday afternoon.  This was the Lumberjacks’ fifth straight shutout victory to open up the season, which is the first time that this has happened in program history.  HSU goals came in the 68th minute when Marco Silveira connected on a missed shot by Niccolas Herrera Land off an assist from Ramiro Rosas.  The defense was led by goalkeeper Jacob Cotton along with defenders Christian Gonzalez, Cole Falco, Sean Tucker and Solomon Baxter.

 VOLLEYBALL SPLITS IN CCAA ROAD OPENERS

The Lumberjacks went 1-1 in their trip to Southern California to open conference play.  HSU started off the weekend with a four-set loss at Cal State Los Angeles this past Friday afternoon.  Lindsey McLaughlin paced the ‘Jacks with her 13 kills while Carla Crespo had 30 digs.  Humboldt State bounced back with a four-set win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday afternoon to improve to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA.  Anna Hopsodar had 13 kills to lead HSU while Lenox Loving and McLaughlin each had 12 and 10 kills respectively.  Loving added 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season while Riley White recorded her first with 16 assists and 13 digs.  Crespo added 16 digs and Riley Tishlarich had 24 assists.

 WOMEN’S SOCCER SPLIT THEIR TWO MATCHES IN THE BAY AREA

Humboldt State went 1-1 in its two matches in the Bay Area this past weekend.  The 3-2-1 Lumberjacks started their weekend with a 1-0 loss at Menlo College this past Thursday afternoon.  The Oaks scored in the seventh minute for the game-winner.  HSU had an offside call for them with two minutes left in regulation as it looked like Kelsey Bess scored the game-tying goal for the ‘Jacks.  The Lumberjacks bounced back with a 3-0 win at Holy Names on Saturday afternoon with Mia Castaneda leading the way with a game-winning goal and an assist.  Also scoring for the ‘Jacks were Brooke Weese and Clara Lenihan while Bess and Erin Mohr each had assists.  Alexis Aguilar recorded three saves in goal for HSU for her second shutout of the season.

 CLASS OF 2020/2021 HUMBOLDT STATE ATHLETICS’ HALL OF FAME CEREMONY SET FOR OCTOBER 8

The Humboldt State University Department of Athletics’ Hall of Fame Ceremony is set for Friday, October 8 at the Sapphire Palace Event Center at the Blue Casino & Hotel in Blue Lake, Calif.  The evening will begin at 6pm with social hour and to continue at 7pm with dinner and the ceremony.

 HSU will be inducting 13 Lumberjacks and one team into the Hall of Fame.  The Class of 2020 will be represented by Laura Champ, Heather Johnston, Scott Peters, Lisa Petty, Lyndon Rowells and Chrissy Stalf.  The Class of 2021 inductees are Nicholas Bawden, Bridget Berg, Dan Collen, Katie Harris, Staci Self, Anetra Torres, Zack Weinberger and the 1976 Men’s Cross Country Team.  For more information and to purchase tickets for the Humboldt State Athletics’ Hall of Fame, Ceremony, go to https://hsujacks.com/honors/humboldt-state-athletics-hall-of-fame.  BURTON AND GRANADOS THIS WEEK’S HUMBOLDT STATE LUMBERJACK STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

This week’s Humboldt State Lumberjack Student-Athletes of the Week are pair of cross country runners in Shane Burton and Rosa Granados.  Both paced the men’s and women’s cross country to a second place finish at the Jim Hunt Invitational this past rainy Saturday morning at Baywood Golf & Country Club in Arcata. 

 Burton finished in fifth place with a time of 26:45.7to lead the way for the Lumberjack men in the 8K race. 

 Granados captured the 6K invitational with a time of 23:14.99 to lead the way for HSU’s women’s team.
