This Week in Lumberjack Sports

 THREE OF THE LUMBERJACKS' FALL TEAMS AT HOME THIS WEEK

The Humboldt State volleyball team along with the Lumberjack men’s and women’s soccer teams will be at home this week.  HSU’s volleyball team will host Sonoma State this Wednesday, October 13 at 5pm at Lumberjack Arena. After hosting the Seawolves on Wednesday, HSU will travel to Rohnert Park on Saturday, October 16 for a 5pm match with Sonoma State.  Before HSU soccer teams return home on Sunday, both of the Lumberjack teams will be in Turlock on Thursday, October 14 (women at 4:30pm; men at 7pm).  The ‘Jacks will return to College Creek Field on Sunday, October 17 when they host Cal State East Bay (women-11:30am; men-2pm).

 JACKS FINISH WEEKEND WITH 1-1 DOUBLE OT TIE AT CSUMB

Humboldt State (6-2-2, 0-2-2 CCAA) finished its weekend with a 1-1 double overtime tie at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday.  Adrian Gallardo posted a season high 11 saves in goal for the ‘Jacks. Christian Gonzalez scored HSU’s goal on a ball from Marco Silveira late in the first half and also recorded a key save late in regulation for the ‘Jacks.  Earlier this weekend, HSU lost 3-1 at No. 25 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday.  Yushi Kato scored the Lumberjacks’ goal early in the first half off a missed shot by Nico Herrera Land. 

 WOMEN’S SOCCER BATTLES IN TWO CONFERENCE ROAD MATCHES

The Lumberjack women’s soccer team went 0-2 on the road to begin their three-match road trip.  Humboldt State (3-4-4, 0-2-2 CCAA) started the weekend with a 2-0 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson.  The Toros scored both of their goals in the second half while Alexis Aguilar tied her season high in saves for the ‘Jacks with eight.  On Sunday, HSU lost 2-0 to Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside as the Otters scored two second half goals.  Aguilar had one save in goal for the Lumberjacks.

 WILLIAMSON AND RUSK LEAD HSU IN ILLINOIS

Both of the Humboldt State men’s and women’s cross country teams participated in the Lewis Conference Crossover Classic this weekend in Romeoville, Illinois.  The Lumberjack men finished in 16th place out of 24 teams while HSU’s women finished in 18th place out of 25 teams.  Saedy Williamson and Ian Rusk led the way for the Lumberjack runners.  Williamson finished in 52nd place time of 23:33.1 in the 6K race while Rusk ran a 26:05.5 to finish in 61st place in the 8K race. 

 VOLLEYBALL ENTERS WEEK 2-6 IN THE CCAA

Humboldt State (3-8, 2-6 CCAA) went 0-2 on the road in the CCAA this past week.  The Lumberjack started the week with a three-set loss (9-25, 19-25, 21-25) to Cal State San Marcos. Hannah Cantrell and Lindsey McLaughlin each had five kills while Kaitlyn Patterson had 15 digs to lead the way for the ‘Jacks.  They finished the week with a three-set loss (17-25, 20-25, 15-25) to Cal State East Bay.  Lindsey McLaughlin paced HSU with seven kills and five total blocks.

 BASKETBALL SEASON AROUND THE CORNER

Humboldt State men’s and women’s basketball teams will officially begin to practice this weekend.  The Lumberjack women will host Southern Oregon in an exhibition game on Friday, October 29 at 5:30pm.  They will open up the regular season in Seattle, Wash., taking on Western Washington on November 12.  HSU’s home opener is set for Saturday, November 27 at 2pm, when the ‘Jacks host Dominican.  Humboldt State’s men will have their regular season opener on November 12 in Carson when they face Western Washington. Their home opener is set for Saturday, November 20 at 7pm as the ‘Jacks host Lincoln University, coached by former NBA player Gary Payton. This year, Humboldt State will host the six-team CCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship March 3-5.

 WILLIAMSON, GALLARDO AND GONZALEZ THIS WEEK’S HUMBOLDT STATE STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

A member of the Humboldt State women’s cross country team and a pair of Lumberjack men’s soccer players are this week’s Humboldt State Student-Athletes of the Week in Saedy Williamson, Adrian Gallardo and Christian Gonzalez.

 Williamson led the Lumberjack women to a 18th place finish out of 25 teams at the Lewis Crossover Classic on Saturday in Romeoville, Ill.  The sophomore runner finished in 52nd place with her time of 23:33.1 in the 6K race.

 Gallardo recorded 17 saves in the Lumberjacks’ 0-1-1 weekend.  In HSU’s 3-1 loss at No. 25 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, the freshman keeper had six saves in 90 minutes.  He finished the weekend with a season high 11 saves in 110 minutes in HSU’s 1-1 double overtime tie at CSUMB. 

 Gonzalez scored his first goal of the season in the Lumberjacks’ 1-1 double overtime tie on Sunday at CSUMB.  The junior transfer’s goal came off a corner kick from Marco Silveira late in the second half.  He also had a save late in regulation for the ‘Jacks.
