 MEN’S BASKETBALL STARTS OFF 2021-22 WITH TWO IMPORTANT REGIONAL VICTORIES

The Humboldt State men’s basketball team went 2-0 this past weekend in the CCAA/GNAC Challenge in Carson, Calif.  The ‘Jacks started the weekend with a 70-69 win over Western Washington when Jaden Edwards connected on both of his free throws with three seconds left in the game. Edwards finished the evening with a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.  AJ Sims chipped in with 17 points off the bench while Will Johnson had 12 points and Thomas Melonja added 10 points.  HSU finished the weekend with a 63-59 win over Simon Fraser behind Johnson’s 15-points and 10-rebounds effort.  John Riddick added 10 points for the ‘Jacks, who will have their home opener this Saturday, November 20.at 7pm when they host Lincoln University.  The Oaklanders are coached by NBA Hall of Famer and member of the 75th Anniversary Team, Gary Payton. 

 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BATTLES IN WASHINGTON

The Lumberjack women’s basketball team went 0-2 to being their 2021-22 season in Seattle, Wash., this past weekend.  HSU started the weekend with a 68-56 loss to Western Washington despite Citlaly Davalos’ 16 points. Madison Parry chipped in 15 points while Ashley Taylor Peralta added 11 points for the ‘Jacks.  The Lumberjacks finished the weekend with a heartbreaking 54-52 loss to Seattle Pacific University.  Kaz Parks paced HSU with 18 points while Madison Parry added nine points and Julia Iman and Mariah Barraza each scored eight points. 

 VOLLEYBALL FINISHES 2021 SEASON

Humboldt State’s volleyball team finished their season with two matches at home this past weekend at Lumberjack Arena.  HSU started the weekend with a four-set loss (13-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-27) to Cal State Dominguez Hills.  Lindsey McLaughlin paced the ‘Jacks with 10 kills while Kaitlyn Patterson had four service aces and Carla Crespo recorded 31 digs.  On Senior Day on Saturday, HSU lost in three sets (23-25, 12-25, 14-25) to Cal State Los Angeles. McLaughlin had eight kills and 13 digs to lead the way for the ‘Jacks.  Prior to the match on Saturday, Humboldt State (3-18, 2-16 CCAA) recognized its seniors in Hannah Cantrell, Carla Crespo, Lenox Loving, Jasmine McNeal and Christa Pilgrim. 

 WOMEN’S ROWING PARTICIPATED IN THE HEAD OF THE LAGOON

The Lumberjack women’s rowing team participated in the Head of the Lagoon this past Saturday in Foster City, Calif.  After a two-hour delay, HSU had a strong showing against traditionally strong NCAA Division I programs.  HSU finished in second place in the novice 8+ and third in the novice 4+.  The ‘Jacks finished in eighth in the both the collegiate 8+ and collegiate 4+.  The ‘Jacks will return to the water in the New Year for their championship season.

 SIX ‘JACKS NAMED TO THE ALL-CCAA TEAM

Six members of the 2021 Humboldt State men’s soccer team were named to the All-CCAA Men’s Soccer Team.  This was the most ever since the ‘Jacks joined the CCAA.  Marco Silveira was selected to the First Team while Adrian Gallardo and Dylan Tovani were named to the Second Team.  Three Lumberjacks received Honorable Mention Team honors in Christian Gonzalez, Devin Hauenstein and Motoki Sato.  HSU finished its season with a 10-5-2 record.  The five losses were the fewest since 2000 while the ten wins was the most since 2006.  HSU also allowed just 14 goals this season which is the fewest goals in a season. 

 TWO ‘JACKS EARN POST-SEASON HONORS FOR LUMBERJACK WOMEN’S SOCCER

Humboldt State seniors Tana Eri and Claire Bareilles each received post-season honors this past week. Eri was named to CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Women’s Soccer First Team. This was the second time in her career that Eri received this prestigious honor.  Bareilles was selected to the All-CCAA Women’s Soccer Honorable Mention Team for the first time during her career.

 CANTRELL AND EDWARDS ARE THIS WEEK’S HUMBOLDT STATE LUMBERJACKS’ STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

This week’s Humboldt State Lumberjacks’ Student-Athletes of the Week are volleyball player Hannah Cantrell and men’s basketball player Jaden Edwards.

 Cantrell finished her career as a Jack with 13 kills and a .184 hitting percentage in HSU's two home matches against Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A.  She recorded nine kills and three service aces including four digs against the Toros.  On Senior Day, she had four kills and two service aces against the Golden Eagles.

 Edwards averaged 15.5 points and 12.0 rebounds in HSU's 2-0 weekend at the CCAA/GNAC Challenge.  He shot 48% from the field including 80% from the line.  The junior started the weekend with 16-points and 14-rebounds including scoring the game-winning free throws in the Lumberjacks' 70-69 win over WWU.  He finished the weekend with 15-points and 10-rebounds while going seven-for-ten from the field.
