Traveling to Humboldt? Check Road Conditions

August 9, 2018

The following message was recently sent to all current and incoming students.

Dear Students,

Fall semester classes begin Aug. 20, and many of you will soon be traveling to the area. Be aware that wildfires may require you to take alternate routes, and above all, please travel safely.

HSU is far away from the major fires burning in Northern California. However, there have been large and destructive fires that have caused closures of highways that students often use. They include Highway 299 near Redding, which is currently closed, and Highway 20 in Lake County, which has had closures and detours in recent days.

You can check current road conditions on the CalTrans website and theOregon Department of Transportation website.

It is possible that those of you traveling from the south will need to get to Highway 101 just north of San Francisco, if not sooner. Those traveling from the north might need to get to Highway 101 using Highway 199, if not sooner. If you are traveling from the east, you might need to choose a different route as your usual one may be closed or have delays.

When traveling, be sure to check the weather via the National Weather Service.

Again, please travel safely. We look forward to welcoming you back and, for new students, welcoming you for the first time!
