Dear campus community, 

The Sustainable Humboldt Innovative Futures Trust (SHIFT, formerly HEIF) is a fund made up of student fee money that supports, coordinates, and implements innovative campus sustainability projects (to learn more, visit our website here). SHIFT achieves its purpose by advancing student ideas that promote sustainable modes of transportation, increase clean energy generation and efficiency, increase water conservation, restore habitat, promote social/environmental/food justice, and reduce waste. Portions of the fund also support education and behavior change initiatives, student aid, and student internships.

STUDENTS: From now through March 1st, SHIFT is accepting Grant Proposals! A successful proposal will be developed in partnership with a department or faculty member who can manage the spending of the grant. Historically, projects without a home department are less successful and thus the committee is less likely to approve said proposals. A successful proposal will also have a well thought out description, anticipated outcome, and a proposed budget. Only students may submit.

STAFF & FACULTY: Help us spread the word about SHIFT Grants to students! Forward this email or request a class or group presentation from SHIFT staff. We can bring a 5- 15 min presentation to your audience or do a longer presentation with time for Q&A in your classroom. We welcome all ideas, questions, and are happy to workshop ideas you may have so they fit the criteria of SHIFT.

Timeline for submission and fund allocation is as follows:

• Ideas are accepted anytime between December 1, 2023 - March 1, 2024.

• Final Deadline for all submissions is March 1, 2024. 

• Committee will discuss and vote on Ideas during the SHIFT Committee meetings following proposal submission.

• If your proposal is approved, you can expect to hear from a member of the committee sometime in April.

•  Funds will be allocated to the respective department no sooner than August 2024.
