Six ‘Jacks Named to the 2021 All-CCAA Men’s Soccer Team
Six members of the Humboldt State men’s soccer team were selected to the 2021 All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Soccer Team as voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches. These six were Marco Silveira (First Team), Dylan Tovani (Second Team), Adrian Gallardo (Second Team), Christian Gonzalez (Honorable Mention), Devin Hauenstein (Honorable Mention) and Motoki Sato (Honorable Mention). The six All-CCAA honorees are the most ever by a Lumberjack men’s soccer team since joining the conference in 2006.
Silveira scored seven goals and recorded ten assists for 24 points. The senior forward also had four game-winning goals He led the ‘Jacks in all three categories. This was Silveira’s first time being selected to the All-CCAA First Team. Twice during this season, the Salvador, Brazil, native was named the CCAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. He currently leads the CCAA with his ten assists and is tied for the conference lead with his four game-winning goals. Silveira is fourth in points and tied for sixth in goals scored.
The tri-captain is 13th in the nation in assists per game while he is eighth in total assists and 20th in game-winning goals Silveira finished his career at HSU, second in assists with 24 and tied for 11th in goals scored with 15. His ten assists this season is fifth on the single season list.
Tovani scored three goals this season and assisted on two others. Of his three goals, two were game-winners including in HSU’s 1-0 home finale win over San Francisco State. He started in all 16 matches that he played in this season for the ‘Jacks at one of the defenders’ positions.
The junior defender and the ‘Jacks defense allowed just 14 goals this season, the fewest since 2006. Humboldt State also started the season with seven straight shutouts, the most consecutive shutouts in a season. This is the first time during his collegiate career that Tovani has earned All-CCAA honors. In the recent CCAA statistics report, the tri-captain is tied for seventh in game-winning goals.
Gallardo posted a 0.850 goals against average with a 0.829 saves percentage. He recorded seven shutouts this season including six to begin the season for the ‘Jacks. The Hesperia, Calif., native posted a season high 11 saves in the Lumberjacks’ 1-1 double overtime tie at Cal State Monterey Bay on October 10.
His 0.850 goals against average is a single season record at HSU while his seven shutouts are second on the single season shutout list. In the recent NCAA Division II Statistics report, Gallardo is 12th in saves percentage, 13th in shutouts and 27th in goals against average. In the recent CCAA statistics report, Gallardo is second in saves percentage, third in goals against average, tied for third in shutouts and fourth in saves per game.
Gonzalez played a key role just like Gallardo and Tovani in the Lumberjack’s defense this past season. He started in all 17 matches for the ‘Jacks this season. The first time All-CCAA honoree scored his first goal as a Lumberjacks in Humboldt State’s 1-1 double overtime tie at Cal State Monterey Bay. For the season, the junior defender had eight shot attempts including four on goal.
This is the second time in his career that Hauenstein has been named to the All-CCAA Team, both times to the Honorable Mention Team. This season, the junior midfielder scored two goals and had two assists in the 16 matches he played in for the ‘Jacks. He started in 16 of the 17 matches this season for HSU.
Sato started in all 17 matches for the ‘Jacks this season. The junior midfielder recorded seven shot attempts this season including one on goal. Earlier this season, Sato was named the first recipient of the Coach Bob Kelly award. This is presented to the Lumberjack soccer player who has best exemplified principles Dr. Kelly emphasized: dedication to self-improvement, a commitment to collective effort, and the value of striving for academic excellence.
Humboldt State, under the guidance of head coach Fred Jungemann, finished the 2021 season with a 10-5-2 overall record including a 4-5-2 CCAA record. The ten wins was the most since 2006 when the ‘Jacks finished with a 11-6-3 record. The five losses were the fewest by a Lumberjack men’s soccer team since 2000 when the ‘Jacks went 11-5-3. Earlier this season, HSU was ranked as high as No. 13 in the United Soccer Coaches/NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Rankings.
