A Sad Day at Humboldt State
Today our campus grieves a horrible tragedy. As I am sure you know, last night a charter bus carrying admitted students from the Los Angeles area to visit Humboldt State University was in an accident, killing at least 10 and injuring more than 30.
We are heartbroken by the loss of so much promise in these lives cut tragically short. I ask that you keep the victims and their families in your thoughts.
Among the fatalities is one of our admissions counselors, Arthur Arzola, who had worked for Humboldt State for the last year in the Los Angeles area. He was a kind, passionate young man who touched countless lives. His commitment to expanding access to education for low-income and first-time students motivated his work and his life, and he welcomed hundreds of students and their families into the Humboldt State family. Arthur’s loss will be felt deeply on this campus.
Earlier this morning, I was able visit with some of the victims at the hospitals in the area near the accident. At this time of great tragedy, I am heartened by the continuing enthusiasm among these young people to pursue their education.
We should all be proud of the many staff and faculty who coordinated our campus response. They answered calls, connected families with students, worked with other agencies, and so much more. They are continuing to go above and beyond, working long hours with professionalism and care. I also want to extend my deepest gratitude to the first responders at the scene who risked their lives save others.
Any students in need of additional support are urged to contact the Counseling Center on campus at (707) 826-3236. Staff or faculty seeking additional support may utilize the Employee Assistance Program at (707) 443-7358.
