Sabine Postma Named Humboldt State’s Outstanding Student Award for Excellence in Intercollegiate Athletics Recipient

April 28, 2021

As announced on https://osa.humboldt.edu/ this past Tuesday, Humboldt State Lumberjack women's soccer player Sabine Postma was named the recipient of the 2020-21 Outstanding Student Award for Excellence in Intercollegiate Athletics. This was voted on by the Outstanding Student Awards committee.

Postma, who graduated in December 2020, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology, was a three-year letter-winner for the Humboldt State Lumberjacks’ women’s soccer team.  Earlier this academic year, Postma was named the recipient of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Soccer Championship Scholar-Athlete. Postma was named to the CCAA Fall Academic Honor Roll.

"I only had a short time to coach Sabine (Postma), but in those three months I learned a lot about her as a person and player,” said Humboldt State head women’s soccer coach Grant Landy.  “It was clear earlier on that what you got from her on the soccer field was how she approached her academics, her work in the community and her life in general.  It was always at a 100% pace.  There were no cutting corners from Sabine, just good old-fashion work, dedication and perseverance.   It was clear she meant a lot to our team and to her teammates.  She was a leader in every way and set a great standard for our athletes.   What a great honor and well deserved for a very special player and person!"

During the 2019-20 academic year, Postma and her teammate, Mary Swisher, were the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's (SAAC) co-treasurers.  She started in 46 of the 49 matches she played in the Green and Gold.  She played in 4170 minutes and scored five goals, recorded 11 assists and two of her goals were game-winning goals.

In 2019-20, Postma was the recipient of the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award while being named to the CCAA Fall Academic Team as well as the CCAA All-Academic Team.  Postma earned the CCAA Fall-Academic Team and CCAA All-Academic Team Awards in 2017-18 and 2018-19.  She was selected to the 2017 All-CCAA Women's Soccer Team.  During her intercollegiate career, Postma was a Humboldt State University Presidential Scholar every semester she was enrolled at HSU.  The Lumberjacks were named recipients of the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award during Postma's career.

Postma and Swisher also played an integral role in the women’s soccer team’s Bracelet for Change with all the profits going to the Humboldt State’s African American Center for Academic Excellence.

“Sabine (Postma) has won many awards while at HSU and people may say, “It’s Sabine, she’s great!”  said Humboldt State Athletics’ Academic Coordinator Sei Hee Hwang.  “And yes, Sabine is great! But what people don’t realize is that she wasn’t the fastest, the best soccer player or the smartest in her classroom but, she was the hardest working. As an academic advisor, that's all I can ask from students and I cannot be prouder of the person she is today.  In a perfect world, I would give a piece of Sabine to everyone because this world needs the positivity that she brings but since I can’t, I hope that everyone has a chance to cross paths with Sabine. I cannot wait for the impact she’ll be making going forward with her academics, career and life!”

Due to Covid19 restrictions, the awardees will be announced via the official OSA 2020-21  website and the HSU Instagram Stories. To allow for some excitement and build up, we are going to begin announcing the winners on April 26th and will release new winners each day to culminate in the Outstanding Students being announced on Friday, April 30th.
