Sabine Postma Named Humboldt State’s NCAA Woman of the Year Nominee

July 14, 2021

Humboldt State University women’s soccer player, Sabine Postma, is the university’s nominee for the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year.  Over 220,00 women are competing in college sports, and the NCAA received 535 nominations for this prestigious award.

Rooted in Title IX and directed by the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics, the NCAA Woman of the Year program celebrates the accomplishments of female college athletes across all three NCAA divisions. For 31 years, this program has honored the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of outstanding female college athletes.

Conference offices will select up to two nominees each from their pool of member school nominees.  All nominees who compete in a sport not sponsored by their school's primary conference, as well as associate conference nominees and independent nominees, will be considered by a selection committee.  Then, the Woman of the selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees---- 10 from each division.

From the Top 30, the Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division and announce nine finalists.  The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will choose the 2021 Woman of the Year from the nine finalists.  At an awards ceremony Oct. 17 in Indianapolis, the Top 30 honorees will be celebrated, and the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year will be name.  You can learn more about the award program, next steps and previous winners by visiting ncaa.org/woty.

Last week, Postma was named to the 2020-21 Academic All-America® Women’s Soccer Team, presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), as announced this morning.  Postma is the first Humboldt State women’s soccer player to earn this prestigious honor.  She was a three-year letter-winner for the Lumberjacks who graduated this past December with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. Postma was a member of the Department of Athletics’ Presidential Scholar List every semester during her intercollegiate career.

Earlier this spring, Postma was named Humboldt State’s Dr. Hal Charnofsky female recipient.  Along with those honors this academic year, Postma was named the 2020-21 Humboldt State Outstanding Student-Award for Excellence in Intercollegiate Athletics recipient and to the Academic All-District® Women’s Soccer First Team.  Back in December, Postma was the recipient of the 2020 CCAA Championship Women’s Scholar-Athlete Award. She was a three-time member of the CCAA Fall Academic Honor Roll.

During her career in the Green and Gold, Postma scored four goals and assisted on eleven.  She started in 46 of the 49 games she played in for the Lumberjacks.  Of her four goals, two were game-winners.  She was named to the 2017 All-CCAA Honorable Mention Team.

This past fall, Postma along with teammate Mary Swisher, played an integral role in the women's soccer team's Bracelet for Change with all the profits going to the Humboldt State's African American Center for Academic Excellence.
