Power Down HSU! March 30 1pm-5pm

March 30, 2016

Power Down HSU is a campus-wide event that saves large amounts of energy and reduces emissions by simply powering down ventilation systems, switching off office equipment and take other steps that will have cause minimal disruption and be generally unobtrusive. Even though the behind-the-scenes decrease in energy consumption will produce the most energy savings, steps that faculty, staff, and students can take are just as important.

In order for this event to be successful and to have more energy savings, Green Campus students are seeking active participation. Ways to save energy are detailed online in the Green Campus pledge for Power Down HSU. In addition, by sharing this message with your peers, the impact will be amplified. By taking simple actions, you can make a big impact!

By “powering down” on November 17th, 2015, the campus used 22.8% less energy within a matter of minutes. This first Power Down HSU event saved 1,466.05 kilowatt-hours (kWh), prevented 801 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, and saved more than $175 in energy costs. The most recent event held on March 3rd produced more than double the monetary savings, and more than twice the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions! During this event, campus members stepped up and helped save 3,554 kWh and 1,942 lbs of CO2 emissions.

We believe this campus can reduce even more on March 30th.

Green Campus, part of HSU’s Office of Sustainability, is preparing a series of Power Down HSU events throughout the spring semester. On March 30 and April 21 the campus community will be asked to find ways to save energy, wear Hawaiian shirts, and to have fun while taking action! This upcoming event on March 30 will be held between 1 and 5 p.m.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration of our request. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Spring 2016 Power Down HSU dates:
