Pets are part of the family and we frequently take them with us and then leave them alone in the car.  This practice can be deadly.  A little heat outside a car can quickly make it very hot inside even when you are parked in the shade.  Leaving a pet for “just a minute’ may be too long.  Pets don't sweat and can’t cool themselves like people can and their body temperature can rise quickly.  This can lead to severe illness, organ damage – or even death – in a matter of minutes.

Please don’t take your dog along if it is a warm day and don’t ever leave your dog unattended for more than a few minutes. If you see a dog left unattended in a hot car, try to locate the dog’s owners.  If the dog is in distress call the University Police Department at 826-5555.

Bystanders are the "eyes and ears" to aid in preventing animal abuse and neglect. Getting involved does make a difference, especially for those who may not have a voice.
