New Student Activities Center, Conference & Event Services, and Changes to Building Use Priorities

June 11, 2021

Work is currently underway to create an exciting, new, student-focused space within the former UC building, currently referred to as the Student Activities Center (SAC). Changes include the development of a new lounge for commuter students, student meeting space, and movie theatre. Many of these new initiatives come with input from the SAC student task force and other critical areas of student voices on campus. To ensure continuity of student engagement and student life initiatives, the SAC now reports to the Dean of Students, which focuses on the student affairs areas within Enrollment Management.

This new hub of student activity will necessitate changes to some commonly used spaces on campus. The Kate Buchanan Room will now be divided into several smaller areas for student engagement and will no longer be reservable for campus events throughout the academic year, with limited exceptions. There are also changes anticipated for the Karshner Lounge and South Lounge to include large screen TVs, video game consoles, billiard games, music, and other entertainment activities that help to create a student-friendly space.

Conference & Event Services Office

In an effort to improve services to campus, the Conference & Event Services (CES) office has been created. CES, in collaboration with the 25Live Administrator, will manage all non-academic spaces in the 25Live campus scheduling software and will serve as the primary resource for events on campus. While many events will still be scheduled and planned to be held virtually for the Fall semester, CES will be contacting various campus partners over the course of the summer to address any concerns about in-person event logistics and new COVID-19 requirements. Be advised that requirements will continue to change as we adjust to new information and as the county's COVID-19 status fluctuates.

Room reservation requests in 25Live are scheduled to reopen on June 14. Room reservation requests will be approved on a case-by-case basis through Central Scheduling and Advance Planning input based on their need and risk evaluation. The Conference & Event Services office is a newly developed department and is in the process of redefining the policies and procedures pertaining to campus events. Room reservation priority for the fall semester will be based on campus need and each request will be reviewed by the CES team and advised accordingly.

We appreciate your patience and flexibility while we work through these new developments and implementation of new protocols and procedures. More information about events on campus, facility rentals, or the CES program can be found on the new CES website, and any questions about events may be sent directly to the Campus Events Coordinator at ces@humboldt.edu.
