New Interim Associate Vice President of Academic Programs

Dr. Carmen Bustos-Works (photo) will be joining HSU and Office of Academic Affairs as Interim Associate Vice President of Academic Programs beginning August 2, 2021. Dr. Bustos-Works comes to us from Sonoma State University (SSU) and has significant experience in assessment, curriculum, and accreditation but also in the blend of science and liberal arts and the success of students from diverse backgrounds.   

Dr. Bustos-Works began her career at SSU as a faculty member in the Chemistry Department. She has served in a number of leadership roles during her 20 years at Sonoma State University including co-chair to develop a Strategic Plan for SSU that created core values including diversity and social justice. She has served as Chair of the Chemistry Department, Chair of University Curriculum Committee, Chair of the Academic Senate, Co-Chair of the University Accreditation Committee, and has contributed to review, reform and assessment of SSU’s general education curriculum.  Most recently she has been serving as the Director of Liberal Studies and Associate Dean for School of Science and Technology. 

Dr. Bustos-Works is a proud LatinX, first generation college student and successfully maneuvered inner city public schools. She has been an advocate for social justice, inclusion and anti-racism her entire life and her journey inspired her to become part of the CSU and a role model for women in STEM.  Dr. Bustos-Works brings a lifetime of personal experience advocating for inclusion, sense of belonging and anti-racism and is a resilient supporter of the teacher-scholar model and lifelong learning grounded in an active and hands-on approach.

The AVP of Academic Programs will replace much of the Vice Provost’s position being vacated by Dr. Mary Oling-Sisay who will be moving to the Vice Provost position at CSU San Marcos.  The Center for Teaching and Learning directed by Dr. Enoch Hale will join the Office of Academic Affairs leadership team and function as a standalone center with a direct reporting line to the provost.
