Message to Students about Fall Semester

May 21, 2020

The communication below was sent to students on May 19.

Humboldt State University is committed to keeping you informed as you get ready for summer and next academic year.

We know, with all the uncertainty and recent CSU news, that many students are finding it difficult to plan for college next year. That’s why we are working with the CSU to further develop our instructional plan for the 2020-21 academic year, with the possibility of some face-to-face instruction. It is student-friendly, it is student-centered, and it makes HSU more affordable than ever.

What does this mean? It means we’re investing in you to help make your continuation to your degree as easy as possible.

An investment in your educational success

  • If you have applied and completed the process to live on campus next year, you can either move in at the beginning of fall semester, or if we have to push physical move-in day back a little, you will still receive a $1,000 savings via our Housing Scholarship. If you continue to live on campus past next year, that scholarship will remain available to you for up to 4 years in total (a savings of $4,000).
  • You may have also heard about the $200 housing deposit removal for this year. If you have already paid this deposit, but find yourself needing this money to help meet your financial needs over the summer, you can request a refund of this deposit; otherwise, it will still apply towards your 2020-21 housing bill. Contact the housing office for more information.
  • If you have planned to move off-campus for the coming year, we know you might be reluctant to sign a long-term lease. For guidance in this process, visit our Off-Campus Housing website. At this site, you will find tips and strategies for making the best decision about your off-campus housing choices. You can also explore available property listings, student room listings, use the roommate finder, or schedule an appointment with our Off-Campus Housing Coordinator.

Keeping the Green and Gold spirit strong

  • Show your Humboldt State spirit virtually by downloading a customized HSU Zoom background, featuring some of our favorite local scenery.
  • We are dedicated to the student experience and continue developing innovative ways to keep student life fun and interesting in true Lumberjack fashion. That means continuing Green and Gold Friday activities, Game or Movie Nights, and more.

HSU is getting ready for you.

  • The CSU system is looking to be primarily virtual in the fall, as will Humboldt State, although we are exploring the option to include some limited in-person instruction where it makes the most sense and where we can stay in accordance with public health and county guidelines. While we remain virtual, HSU is dedicated to offering you the best educational experience possible. HSU is creating plans that meet our students’ needs and support academic success so you can Keep Learning. We are working closely with our community to improve our chances of getting back to a safe, in-person environment as soon as possible.
  • Over the next few weeks, the campus will send emails updating you on the modality of your Fall classes—virtual, or a blend of virtual and in-person. And we will provide an option for you to explore your academic plan for the coming year at Humboldt State.
  • During the upcoming summer months, our faculty will be honing their teaching strategies to become even better at delivering distance instruction through the online environment we are in, to bring an interactive and engaging experience for students.
  • Your safety is the highest priority, so we want to let you know that our Health Center and related services are ready to act on situations that arise this fall. HSU offers a fully operational clinic, pharmacy, and lab. We have a well-trained medical staff that is able to help you. In addition, our Counseling & Psychological Services staff offer both personal and group counseling, available to you no matter where you are.

The Lumberjack family is focused on you as a student and providing the best possible educational experience you can receive, and your safety is always a priority. You can also be sure that the Green and Gold is shining bright. More information will be provided throughout the summer to help you continue in your journey to your degree at Humboldt State.

Thank you,
Eboni N. Turnbow, Ph.D.
Interim Dean of Students
Humboldt State University
