Men’s Soccer Returns to the Pitch for Four Matches

Humboldt State’s men’s soccer team will return to the pitch from April 16-23 for four matches on the road against Southern Oregon University and Menlo College.  The Lumberjacks will face Southern Oregon on April 16 and 18 and Menlo College on April 21 and 23.

 HSU, under the direction of head coach Fred Jungemann, went 2-0 in its first two matches this spring with a 3-1 victory at Dominican and a 5-0 win over Holy Names at Wilder Fields in Orinda, Calif., on March 21 and 22. 

 In their first match, the Lumberjacks were down 1-0 early and then scored three unanswered goals.  The first coming in the 27th minute off the foot of Marco Silveira.  The match remained tied until the 68th minute when Thomas Augee scored off a ball from Devin Hauenstein.  Gou Nitta’s goal in the 75th minute sealed the win for the ‘Jacks.

 Humboldt State improved to 2-0 the next day with a 5-0 shutout victory over Holy Names.  Motoki Sato scored two of HSU’s five goals while the three others were from Edgar Castaneda, Daniel Adeyeye and Hauenstein. Assisting on those goals were Yushi Katu, Dylan Tovani, Hauenstein and Adeyeye. 

In both matches, Adrian Gallardo and Jacob Cotton were in goal for the ‘Jacks each for a half of both matches.

The Lumberjacks started the return to participation process in Fall 2020 and continue this Spring following County Public Health, NCAA, and University protocols including testing on a regular and consistent basis. Protocols include

  • Consultation with Humboldt County Public Health officials
  • Frequent testing — teams in competition will be tested three times a week
  • Small group practices
  • Wearing face coverings on campus and on the road
  • Travel-related quarantines

 
Each team will be on the road for multiple games over the course of one to three weeks. None of the games are part of regular conference competition, which is not occurring this year.
