McCay Shines in First Heptathlon of Spring

February 27, 2016

CHICO, Calif. – Humboldt State track & field sent just one athlete to compete in this week's 31st Annual Chico Multi-Event Classic. Marissa McCay placed second overall in the heptathlon with 4712 total points. McCay surpassed her previous high of 4036 points and recorded the third most points in program history.

"We are very happy with her competition," said Coach Sarah Ingram. "She recorded many lifetime PRs, and her total heptathlon score was 4712 for second place in a competitive field."

McCay opened the heptathlon by winning the 100m hurdles with a PR time of 15.28, her first sub 16-second finish of her career. The third-year Lumberjack followed up her hurdles win with a tie for first in the high jump. McCay and Division I UC Davis' Erinn Beattie each cleared 1.67m, another personal-best for McCay, to share top honors in the event.

McCay closed out the event's first day finishing third in the shot put with an 11.10m mark and finishing the 200m in 27.33, good for her third career-best of the day.

After one day, McCay led the field with 2910 points, 64 ahead of second place Brooke Whitburn from Chico State.

On Friday, McCay opened the day placing second in the long jump with a mark of 5.36m, tying the career-high in the event she set last weekend in the Green and Gold.

After placing fifth in the javelin (30.11m) and seventh in the 800m (2:32.44), McCay finished second only to Chico State's Whitburn at the conclusion of the seven events. Whitburn finished with 4787 total points, just 75 ahead of McCay.

"It's a testament to the entire coaching staff when you have an athlete complete in a multi-event," said Head Coach Scott Pesch. "When you have jumps, throws, hurdles, and runs, it shows how much work she put in."

McCay's point total surpasses the 4442 provisional qualifier mark for NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field.

Humboldt State will next compete at the Kim Duyst Invitational hosted by Stanislaus State on March 4-5.
