Lumberjacks Look To Continue Winning Ways This Weekend at CPP & CSUMB

ARCATA, Calif..--- The Humboldt State Lumberjacks will begin the month of December with a pair of conference games on the road. The Lumberjacks will be in Pomona, Calif., this Thursday, December 5 for a 5:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal Poly Pomona. They will travel to Seaside, Calif., this Saturday, December 7 for a 1pm scheduled contest with Cal State Monterey Bay. HSU is off to its best start since 2014-15 as the Lumberjacks are 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA.

RECAP OF THE WEEKEND: Humboldt State went 2-0 in the Thanksgiving Classic the Lumberjacks hosted in Arcata. The ‘Jacks started the weekend with a 62-49 win over Notre Dame de Namur this past Thursday behind Alexia Thrower’s 27-points, 12-rebounds performance. Gabrielle Carbajal chipped in eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds for HSU. The Lumberjacks finished the weekend with a 63-47 win over Dominican (Calif.) on Saturday. Thrower recorded her third straight double-double with 14 points and a career high 18 rebounds. Madeline Hatch chipped in 12 points while Carbajal added 11 points for the victors.

UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS: Humboldt State is 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA heading into the month of December. The Lumberjacks are averaging 67.3 points per game while giving up 58.6 points per game. They are being out-rebounded 36.1 to 33.4 while shooting 40% from the field, 31% from three’s and 75% from the line. HSU is holding its opponents to just 38% shooting from the field and just 26% from three-point land. The ‘Jacks are also forcing 16.3 turnovers per game while recording 7.7 steals per game.

OFF TO BEST START SINCE ’14-15: The Lumberjacks are 6-1 and off to their best start since 2014-15. The season, HSU started the season 14-1 with its only blemish an 83-74 loss to Seattle Pacific in the West Region Crossover Classic in Seattle, Wash. The Lumberjacks won 13 in a row including their first ten CCAA games until an 85-52 loss at Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 23, 2015.

LUMBERJACK LEADERS: Two players are averaging double digits in scoring in Alexia Thrower (22.3 points per game average) and Gabrielle Carbajal (10.1 points per game). Thrower also leads the team with her 11.1 rebounding average, 15 steals, two blocked shots, 77.5% shooting from the charity stripe and 51.7% shooting from the field. Tyra Turner leads HSU with her 28 assists while Molly Dixon is shooting a team high 40% from three-point land.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Two Lumberjacks have recorded double-doubles this season in Alexia Thrower and Tyra Turner. Thrower has recorded three double-doubles in HSU’s last three games (Cal State L.A., Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican). Turner recorded her double-double in the Lumberjacks’ game against Cal State L.A.

24-8: Humboldt State is 24-8 at home since 2017-18 including 14-5 since the beginning of the 2018-19 season. The Lumberjacks are 5-1 this season with their only blemish a 76-73 loss to Western Washington earlier this month in the West Region Crossover Classic.

RANKED NATIONALLY: HSU as a team are sixth in the nation as the ‘Jacks have only turned the ball over 10.9 times per game. The ‘Jacks are also 25th in assist/turnover ratio (+1.24). Alexia Thrower is fifth in field goals made, seventh in total rebounds, 16th in rebounding average and 21st in double-doubles.

MOVIN’ ON UP: Tyra Turner is moving up on the career lists at HSU. She is second in assists (413), fifth in steals (191) and seventh in free throws made (241). Turner also has scored 912 points in her career and is 33 from moving past Erin Bishop into tenth on HSU’s scoring list. Alexia Turner has scored 635 points in her career and grabbed 356 rebounds.

FIFTH IN D2SIDA WEST REGION POLL: Humboldt State is ranked fifth in this week’s D2SIDA West Region Poll that was released on Monday afternoon as voted on by eight Sports Information Directors in the West Region (two each from the CCAA, GNAC and PacWest). Azusa Pacific is first followed by Cal State San Marcos, Alaska Anchorage and Hawaii Pacific. Rounding out the top ten is UC San Diego, Cal Poly Pomona, Western Washington, Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State.

BRONCOS IN REVIEW: Cal Poly Pomona is 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA entering its game this Thursday versus the Lumberjacks after defeating Concordia-Irvine 68-52 last week. The Broncos are averaging 67.3 points per game while giving up 61.0 points per game. They are out-rebounding their opponents 41.4 to 39.8. Kasey Smith leads the way for CPP with her 15.4 scoring average and 86% shooting from the line. Jackie Robertson is next with her 10.4 scoring average. Robertson leads the way for CPP with her 39 assists, 44% shooting from three’s and 13 steals while Monica Todd is averaging a team leading 8.3 rebounds per game. Sheridan Glover is shooting a team high 57% from the field. Cal Poly Pomona leads the series with HSU 13-7, but two teams have split the last four meetings. HSU won last year 73-65 in Arcata while the Broncos won 77-72 in Pomona.

OTTERS IN REVIEW: Cal State Monterey Bay enters its contest with Stanislaus State with a 0-4 record including a 0-2 CCAA record. The Otters are averaging 59.5 points per game while giving up 67.0 points per game. They are being out-rebounded 34 to 31. Katie Fitzgerald leads the way for CSUMB with her 14.9 scoring average followed by Sylvia Vartazian’s 13.3 average and Camille Parker’s 11.0 average. Parker leads the team with her 6.5 rebounding average and 11 steals while Cheyna Dews leads CSUMB with her 88.9% shooting from the line and 16 assists. Ashley Reynoso is shooting a team best 60% from the field while Serena Tonley is shooting a team high 40% from three’s. HSU leads the all-time series with the Otters 18-10 including winning seven of the last ten meetings. Humboldt State won 64-56 in Seaside and 72-42 in Arcata last year.

UP NEXT: Humboldt State will return home on Thursday, December 12 for a 5:30pm scheduled conference contest with SF State. The Lumberjacks will be back on the road on Saturday December 14 for a 1pm contest at Cal State East Bay in Hayward.
