Lumberjacks to Begin Eight-Game Season Ending Road Trip in the Bay

The Humboldt State Lumberjacks (8-6) will finish off their regular season with an eight-game road trip in the Bay Area against Holy Names and Dominican (Calif.), April 27-May 1.  The Lumberjacks will have a doubleheader in Brisbane, Calif., against Holy Names on April 27.  They will finish the regular season with a six-game series with Dominican, April 28, April 30-May 1 in San Rafael, Calif.

 As a team, Humboldt State is batting .339 with a .536 slugging and .406 on-base percentages.  The Lumberjacks, under the guidance of head coach Shelli Sarchett, have scored 79 runs in their first 14 games.  Four players are hitting over .400 in Izzy Starr (.468), Vanessa Saltos (.452), Micaela Harris (.431) and Danica Grier (.413).  Starr leads the team with her six home runs, .957 slugging percentage and 45 total bases.  Saltos is tied with JoAna Mullins each with a team high .468 on-base percentage while Grier leads the team with her 16 runs scored. Leading the team with her 11 stolen bases is Harris while she also has a team high two triples and six doubles.  Tied for the team lead in hits each with 22 are Harris and Starr. 

 Over in the circle, Karen Di Dio has a team low 2.33 earned run average and a team best 4-0 record.  Ava Hand leads the ‘Jacks with her 16 strikeouts.

 The Lumberjacks will face Holy Names on with a noon starting doubleheader on April 27 at Mission Blue Field in Brisbane, Calif. HSU leads the all-time series with the Hawks 3-0.

 Holy Names will face Dominican on April 23-24, prior to facing the Lumberjacks.  They are 4-12 on the season.  Lyndsey Widner with a .533 batting average and 1.433 on-base percentage along with her .822 slugging percentage.  She also has 24 hits and a team leading eight runs batted in for the Hawks.  Challey Stewart has a team low 2.33 earned run average and Haighley Kissee has struck out a team high 25 batters.

 HSU will travel to San Rafael, Calif., for three doubleheaders with Dominican at Penguin Field.  The teams will play 1pm starting doubleheaders on April 28 and 30.  They will finish off the season with a noon starting doubleheader on May 1.  The Lumberjacks leads the all-time series with Dominican 15-2.

 Dominican is 14-14 overall and 13-7 in the PacWest Conference.  The Penguins will face Holy Names in a home-away series this weekend before facing the Lumberjacks. Team leaders for Dominican are Peyton Mott and Alyssa Ramirez.  Mott leads DU with her .358 batting average, 15 runs batted in, .531 slugging percentage, .418 on-base percentage and eight stolen bases.  Ramirez leads the Penguins with 10 doubles and 13 runs scored.  Alyssa Waltman has a team low 2.92 earned run average with Shelby Keltner recording a team leading 73 strikeouts and seven victories.

 The Lumberjacks started the return to participation process in Fall 2020 and continue this Spring following County Public Health, NCAA, and University protocols including testing on a regular and consistent basis. Protocols include

  • Consultation with Humboldt County Public Health officials
  • Frequent testing — teams in competition will be tested three times a week
  • Small group practices
  • Wearing face coverings on campus and on the road
  • Travel-related quarantines

 Each team will be on the road for multiple games over the course of one to three weeks. None of the games are part of regular conference competition, which is not occurring this year.
