Loss of Retired HSU Philosophy Professor, John W. Powell

April 8, 2021

Dear University Community:

We are saddened to share news of the loss of John W. Powell, a professor in the Department of Philosophy. He passed away at home on March 30 surrounded by his books, cats, and family. We extend our condolences to his wife, Naomi, his children, Rachel, Hannah, and Jonah, and loved ones.

John received his Ph.D. at the University of Oregon in 1988. He started as a lecturer at HSU in 1993 and was hired as a professor in 1995. John served as the chair of the Department of Philosophy from 2014-15 and retired in 2018.

Colleagues described John as the ideal Socratic philosopher. Department chair Benjamin Shaeffer says that John’s research focus was in the philosophy of language. He also wrote about pacifism and the ordinary language movement in analytic philosophy.

“John was the sort of teacher who was always surrounded by students—after class, in his office, or at the local coffee shop—drawn by his passion for philosophy and gentle and encouraging nature,” says Shaeffer.

At this time, the family does not have any plans for a service but appreciates any thoughts of John’s almost 30 years at Humboldt State. In memory, donations may be made to Hospice of Humboldt and the Eureka Symphony.

John’s death is a loss for the Humboldt State community and we are thinking of him and those who are close to him. Students who are in need of additional support during this time are encouraged to contact the Dean of Students’ office at 707.826.3504 or visit that office in Siemens Hall 211. Staff or faculty seeking additional support may utilize the Employee Assistance Program.
