Dear University Community:

We are saddened to share news of the loss of Jayson Mohatt, Technical Director in the  Department of Theatre, Film & Dance, who died of non-COVID natural causes on July 26. He was 63. We extend our condolences to his wife, Star, two sons Joshua and Maxwell, and loved ones. 

Jayson received his undergraduate degree at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. 

For many years, Jayson was an invaluable artisan, educator, and presence in the department. He worked in Center Arts for 16 years before becoming Department of Theatre, Film & Dance Technical Director in 2005, overseeing the theatre scene shop and helping plan, design, and construct complex and sometimes uncooperative setpieces. 

In recent years, Jayson supported numerous mainstage shows including Charlotte's Web, Hay Fever, Evil Dead: The Musical, Adoration of the Old Woman, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Heathers: The Musical, and Dreamers Aquí y Allá, and also supported Mexican folklórico dance, helping to bring a dance group to HSU for a concert and master classes. 

Colleagues recall him as much more than a coworker and mentor--he was also a friend. Described as a raconteur, gentleman cowboy, authentic and honest, he was known for his sense of humor and “Jayson-isms”. 

“Jayson cared deeply about helping the students look amazing on opening night,” says Professor Troy Lescher. “He truly wanted to make their hard work shine. He also remained particularly dedicated to providing special learning opportunities to students no matter their academic major.”

Jayson’s death is a loss for the Humboldt State community and we are thinking of him and those who are close to him.
