Library Seismic Retrofit Delayed

June 9, 2021

The Library Seismic Retrofit has experienced a number of unexpected conditions and requires additional time to complete. Due to the nature of the work, the expected date of completion will be December 2021, therefore the HSU Library main floors 1-3 will remain closed for the Fall 2021 Semester. The Library Ground floor and the services offered within will be open for Fall 2021. The campus is seeking to create a study/computer lab space to provide much-needed library services, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

The Seismic Retrofit required the installation of a full building fire sprinkler system. This installation impacts all spaces within the building floors 1-3 and the University sought to take advantage of the building being unoccupied during COVID-19 and began installation work in October 2020. In addition to the complexity of work, the University has encountered specific contractual issues, and the general contractor has been terminated from the remainder of the work. The Facilities Management, Planning, Design & Construction team will complete the remaining work and continue its coordination with Library occupants and those who may be impacted. We appreciate the patience and commitment of the campus community.
