Invitation to the Philosophy Forum and 30th Annual Social Justice Summit Keynote

February 27, 2024

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students

Please join the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI), the Social Justice, Equity, and Inclusion Center (SJEIC), and the Philosophy Department for the Philosophy Forum on Wednesday, March 6th from 5:30 to 7 pm in the Great Hall. The Philosophy Forum is being held in alignment with the 30th Annual Social Justice Summit, the theme of which is From Conversation to Community. This event is free to attend and all are welcome.

Dr. Maurice Hamington, world renowned Ethics of Care scholar, will deliver the Philosophy Forum and Social Justice Summit Keynote, titled, Revolutionary Care and Inclusive Excellence. Join us to learn more about the ethics of care in higher education and how we can integrate a coordinated approach to good care as a core aspect of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and campus culture. A collective, caring community ethos promotes the wellbeing of the whole person and an integrated awareness of how we engage with each member of our community. Drawing from feminist theory of the past 50 years, and focusing on intentional, responsive actions, the Ethics of Care seeks to humanize interactions and foster a campus environment where every member feels valued and supported.

Maurice Hamington is Professor of Philosophy and Affiliate Faculty of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Portland State University. He writes about the theory and application of feminist care ethics.

Light refreshments will be provided.

With gratitude for all you do,

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI)
