Humboldt State Men’s Soccer Faces Sacramento State on the Road in Final Match This Saturday

Humboldt State men’s soccer team will return to the pitch for the final time this spring this Saturday, May 8 at noon when the Lumberjacks travel to Sacramento, Calif., for a match with the Sacramento State University Hornets. Humboldt State is coming off a 2-0 win at Menlo College on April 23 in Atherton, Calif.

 In their six spring matches, the Lumberjacks went 4-1-1 with their only blemish a 2-1 loss at Southern Oregon University.  During their six matches, Humboldt State has posted four shutouts including back-to-back at Menlo on April 21 and 23.  Jacob Cotton and Adrian Gallardo have shared time in goal each playing a half in each of the six matches.

 HSU started its spring season with a 3-1 win on March 21 at Dominican (Calif.).  The ‘Jacks trailed 1-0 and then scored three unanswered goals by Marco Silveria, Thomas Augee and Gou Nitta with Devin Hauenstein assisting on one of the three goals.  They followed that win with a 5-0 shutout win at Holy Names on March 22.  Motoki Sato scored two of HSU’s season high five goals with Edgar Castaneda, Devin Hauenstein and Daniel Adeyeye scoring the final three goals.  Adeyeye also added an assist while Thomas Augee, Yushi Katu and Dylan Tovani each had an assist in HSU’s win.

 The Lumberjacks continued their winning ways with a 1-0 at Southern Oregon on April 16.  Christian Gonzalez connected on an assist from Devin Hauenstein for the lone goal of the match.  Two days later, HSU fell 2-1 to the Raiders with Thomas Augee connected on a ball from Yushi Katu for the Lumberjacks’ goal. 

 HSU finished the month of April going 1-0-1 at Menlo College on April 21 and 23.  The two teams played to a scoreless tie on April 21.  Humboldt State finished its two-match series with the Oaks with a 2-0 win on April 23.  Daniel Adeyeye connected on a ball from Gou Nitta for HSU’s first goal. HSU sealed the win on a goal by Edgar Castaneda off a ball from Christian Gonzalez. 

 The Lumberjacks started the return to participation process in Fall 2020 and continue this Spring following County Public Health, NCAA, and University protocols including testing on a regular and consistent basis. Protocols include

  • Consultation with Humboldt County Public Health officials
  • Frequent testing — teams in competition will be tested three times a week
  • Small group practices
  • Wearing face coverings on campus and on the road
  • Travel-related quarantines

 
Each team will be on the road for multiple games over the course of one to three weeks. None of the games are part of regular conference competition, which is not occurring this year.
