Humboldt State Men’s Soccer’s 50th Anniversary Season to Commence in Utah

August 2, 2021

Humboldt State University men’s soccer team, under the direction of ninth-year head coach Fred Jungemann, will begin their 2021 season in Salt Lake City, Utah, on September 3 and 5 against Northwest Nazarene and Westminster.  The Lumberjacks’ home opener is set for September 17 at 3:00pm against Simpson.

“It has been a long and frustrating year, but we are excited to be back playing games this fall,” said Jungemann.  “We are looking forward to starting the year off with two tough non-conference games in Salt Lake City.  These out of state trips are always fun for the guys and a memorable part of the student-athlete experience.  The second weekend's games at East Bay are two more tough non-conference games that should be a good challenge to prepare for conference.”

This will be the 50th Anniversary of Lumberjack soccer, more information will be posted later on www.hsujacks.com and on social media at @hsumenssoccer on Instagram,  @HSU_Mens_Soccer on twitter and https://www.facebook.com/HumboldtStateMensSoccer on facebook.

The Lumberjacks were able to play six matches during the shortened 2020-21 season and went 4-1-1 in those matches.  Humboldt State returns 17 players from the 2020-21 season including Devin Hauenstein, Marco Silveira, Motoki Sato and Dylan Tovani.  Hauenstein was named to the 2019 All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Team.  He scored three goals and had five assists during the 2019 season.  Silveira led the Lumberjacks with his 11 assists while adding three goals during the ’19 campaign.  Sato had two assists in his 16 matches with Tovani being starting in all 17 matches that season.

Both Hauenstein and Tovani were named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Men’s Soccer Team.  Sato was the recipient of the CCAA Championships Men’s Soccer Award.

After their two matches in Utah, the ‘Jacks will return to the State of California for a pair of regional match-ups with Hawai’i Pacific and Holy Names on September 10 and 12 in Hayward, California, on the campus of Cal State East Bay.  They will have their first match at College Creek Field on September 17 at 3:00 pm when the ‘Jacks host Simpson.  In their final non-conference match-up, HSU will face CCAA foe Chico State on September 25.

“Per the norm in the CCAA, we are expecting another extremely difficult and competitive conference season,” added Jungemann.  “We have some long and difficult conference road trips, particularly the trips to SoCal.  It is such a privilege to play in such a difficult conference.  The level of coaching and play is amazing every week and really makes for an amazing college soccer experience.  We will look forward to seeing everyone on the field! Go Jacks!”

The ‘Jacks will begin their conference season the weekend of October 1 hosting Cal State San Marcos (12:30pm) and Cal State San Bernardino (11:30am) on October 1 and 3.  They will have a three-match road trip at Cal State Dominguez Hills (October 8 at 4:00pm), Cal State Monterey Bay (October 10 at 11:30am) and Stanislaus State (October 14 at 7:00pm).

After their trip to Turlock, the ‘Jacks will return home for a three-match home stand.  They will face Cal State East Bay (October 17 at 2:00pm), Sonoma State (October 19 at 3:00pm) and San Francisco State (October 21 at 2pm).  Prior to their match against San Francisco State, the Lumberjacks will recognize their seniors.

HSU will end its 2021 regular season on the road with three matches.  The three-match road trip will begin with a pair of matches in Southern California the weekend of October 29 and 31.  The ‘Jacks will face Cal Poly Pomona on October 29 at 3pm and Cal State Los Angeles on October 31 at 11:30am.  Their final match of the regular season is set for November 4 at 2:00pm against Chico State.

The six-team CCAA Men’s Soccer Championship will begin with the First Round on November 7 at the site of the higher seed.  The number one and number two seeded teams will get a first-round bye.  The semi-finals and final will be on the campus of Cal State Los Angeles on November 12 and 14.  The winner of the CCAA Men’s Soccer Championship will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship.
