Humboldt State Athletics Announces Formation of S.E.A. Committee

October 28, 2020

After recent events this past summer, the athletics department chose to take action by forming the Social Equity and Accountability (S.E.A) Committee to create and foster an equitable and inclusive environment.

The committee is chaired by Head Athletic Trainer, Shannon Childs, and also includes Michelle Bento-Jackson (Head Women’s Basketball Coach), Ashley Donnell (Assistant Women’s Rowing Coach), Dr. Amber Gaffney (Faculty Athletic Representative), Megan Hankins-Maldonado (Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach), Jamey Harris (Head Cross Country/Assistant Track & Field Coach), Arlene Wynn (Administrative Coordinator), Sei Hee Hwang (Academic Advisor) and Shelli Sarchett (Head Softball Coach).

“Humboldt State University has a very diverse group of student-athletes. This diversity has not historically been represented in the campus community or in the surrounding communities of Humboldt County. We have an obligation to ensure that our student-athletes have the resources and opportunities they need to not only succeed but thrive here at HSU,” said Chair, Shannon Childs

The purpose of the S.E.A. committee is to organize an effort with long term systemic involvement in the conversation surrounding equity, diversity, and social justice. The committee is dedicated to identifying ways in which Humboldt State University may best support our underrepresented/minoritized student-athletes, staff, and coaches.  The committee will also provide a safe space for our student-athletes, staff, and coaches to address their experiences and concerns regarding social equity, along with creating policies and procedures that invite all voices to the decision-making table.

Throughout the academic year, there will be more opportunities and events that the S.E.A. committee will be holding for the campus community.  We would first like everyone to help us celebrate the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Social Media Campaign which started on Tuesday, October 27 and is running through October 29, 2020.
