Humboldt State’s Women’s Soccer Team Making Bracelets for Change
Humboldt State’s women’s soccer team are making bracelets in support of Black Lives Matter across campus, in Humboldt County and across the nation. The Lumberjacks are asking for donations to Humboldt State’s African American Center for Academic Excellence. Those who make a donation will be mailed a bracelet while supplies last.
“We are making beautiful, handmade bracelets to fundraise for Humboldt State’s African American Center for Academic Excellence,” says the team’s mission statement. “This is our way of standing in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Movement and we hope that you can be part of this, too.”
“We appreciate the efforts and initiative of our student athletes and coaching staff in taking a stand and supporting the Black campus community at HSU,” said Douglas Smith, Humboldt State’s Coordinator of the African American Center for Academic Excellence. “In 2020 and the foreseeable future, we all have a role to play in confronting systemic racism in our society, and no role is less important than the other; it takes both individual and collective reflection and action in making human decency a reality. Thank you to the HSU Women's Soccer Team for your support.”

“I challenged our team to stand up as a group against racial injustice and to support the Black Lives Matter movement,” said Humboldt State’s head women’s soccer coach Grant Landy. “They choose a creative way to continue the conversation and support our local community by making these bracelets.
I hope this is just a first step in each player’s personal journey of fighting for equal rights and just causes.”
