Humboldt State’s Marco Silveira Named CCAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week
As announced this afternoon by the office of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), Humboldt State men’s soccer player Marco Silveira was named the player of the week for the week of August 30-September 5. Silveira scored two goals and recorded two assists in the Lumberjacks’ 2-0 weekend.
The senior forward started the Lumberjacks’ weekend scoring what proved to be the game-winner in HSU’s 2-0 win over Westminster this past Thursday, September 2 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Silveira connected on a ball from Nicolas Herrera Land in the 65th minute. Seventeen minutes later, the ‘Jacks sealed the victory when Daniel Adeyeye connected on a ball from Silveira.
This past Saturday afternoon, once again Silveira played a key role in the Lumberjacks’ 4-0 win over Northwest Nazarene. He assisted on what proved to be the game-winner by Alejandro Lopez. HSU took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Lopez scored off a ball from Silveira. The ‘Jacks doubled their lead in the 55th minute as Silveira scored off a ball from Lopez. Humboldt State sealed the win in the 63rd minute as Dylan Tovani scored on an unassisted goal. Herrera Land’s goal off a cross from Gou Nitta made the final 4-0 ‘Jacks.
For the weekend, Silveira scored two goals, had two assists and one game-winning goal. He played a part of four of the Lumberjacks’ six goals including both game-winning goals. The Petaluma, Calif., native recorded three shot attempts for the weekend and connected on two of those for goals.
For his career, Silveira has scored 10 goals and has 17 assists. He is just two away from moving into fourth place on HSU’s all-time career assists. The senior forward leads the CCAA in points (six), and is tied for first in goals scored (two), assists (two) and game-winning goals (one).
Besides Silveira’s play, the Lumberjacks had stellar performances from their goalkeepers and defenders in Adrian Gallardo, Christian Gonzalez, Sean Tucker, Ethan Conaty, Cole Falco and Dylan Tovani. The back to back shutouts by the Lumberjacks was the first time since 2017 that they have posted back to back shutouts. Gallardo posted two shutouts and recorded nine saves in the two victories for the ‘Jacks.
Humboldt State will continue its four-match road trip this weekend with a pair of matches in Hayward, Calif. The ‘Jacks will face Hawai’i Pacific this Friday, September 10 at 7pm. They will conclude their road trip this Sunday, September 12 at 2pm when the ‘Jacks face Holy Names. HSU will have its home opener on Friday, September 17, when the Lumberjacks host Simpson University at 3pm at College Creek Field.
