Humboldt’s Varsity 8 Victorious at Davis Dual

March 14, 2016

DAVIS, Calif. – Wet conditions and 25-30 mile per hour winds proved to be a real early-season test for Humboldt State rowing. The Lumberjacks, along with UC Davis and Orange Coast College, experienced 40-minute delays on Sunday due to the conditions.

"It was a wild and crazy day," said Head Coach Robin Meiggs. "Times were pretty slow due to how wet and windy it was. Today had probably 100 times worse conditions, but they rose to the occasion and built on yesterday's challenges."

The Lumberjacks raced both an A and B boat in the Varsity 8 competition to open the day. The Humboldt A crew posted the only sub 8:10.0 mark, finishing with a winning time of 7:52.49. Humboldt's B boat crossed in 9:15.3.

HSU also raced in the women's JV 8, finishing in 9:03.2, and in the Novice 8, recording a time of 9:14.08.

"The results were different today, but they felt pretty good about what they did," said Meiggs. "The Novice 8s got to race today, so that will only help. We ultimately did not row the 4s because of the weather."

Meiggs is anticipating the harsh weather to not be as severe for Monday and Tuesday's respective races against St. Mary's College and Mills College.

"We are really looking forward to racing with Mills again," said Meiggs. "It is really nice to go out in consecutive days and have these races going into racing season."
