Four Lumberjacks Receive 2020 NSCA All-American Athlete Awards

October 22, 2020

Four Humboldt State University Lumberjack Student-Athletes were named to the 2020 National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) All-American award recipients as announced by the NSCA.  These four are Kayla Costello (volleyball), Odelia Ryan (volleyball), Joseph Sweeney (football) and Sefa Tavanuu (football).

The NSCA presents these awards to student-athletes that have accomplishments and dedication to strength and conditioning.  These four were nominated by HSU’s strength and conditioning coach Drew Petersen.

“We are proud to have Coach Petersen to join the NSCA in its mission to safely improve athletic performance,” says Eric McMahon, NSCA’s Coaching Program Manager.  “Supporting our student-athletes like Kayla Costello, Odelia Ryan, Joseph Sweeney and Sefa Tavanauu guarantees a stronger future for the NSCA.”

Since the inception of the NSCA All-American Awards, 114 Lumberjack student-athletes have received this honor with Lynell Stokes (women’s basketball) and Reggie Bolton (football) being the first two Lumberjacks to earn this award in 1991.

Media Note: For additional information about the NSCA All-American Athlete of the Year visit www.nsca.com.  Also, the reason that there is two football players is that they are behind in their male nominations.
