Farewell to Dr. Cheryl Johnson

October 3, 2019

Dear HSU Colleagues,

It is with mixed emotion that I write to inform you that Dr. Cheryl Johnson, Executive Director for the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) has accepted a position to become the new Dean of Equity and Student Support with Skyline College within the San Mateo Community College District. Cheryl's final day on campus will be October 11, 2019.

Since arriving at HSU in 2017, Dr. Johnson has had a significant impact on our campus. Using a "Systems Change" approach, Cheryl has led our efforts to update the institutional learning outcomes to include an equity component, as well as best practices in supporting minoritized students. Cheryl has enhanced our ability to hire diverse faculty, staff and administrators via the introduction of the Equity Advocate Model for search committees, and worked with the University Senate to update the Faculty Appendix J document (Retention, Tenure and Promotion) to include an equity component for teaching excellence. Dr. Johnson played a critical role in the development of Equity Arcata and introduced the Collaborative Impact approach to resolving equity issues in our community.

Moving forward, I intend to initiate conversations to determine the next steps for ODEI.

Cheryl will be missed. Please join me in thanking Cheryl for her numerous contributions to our university. You are welcome to attend a celebration for Cheryl on Tuesday, October 8, in the CCR (Siemens Hall 222) at 12:00 pm.

Sincerely,

Dr. Alex Enyedi
Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs
