Farewell to Dr. Brian Mistler, Executive Director of Student Health and Wellbeing Services (SHWS)

November 20, 2019

Dear Friends,

My note is to share that Dr. Brian Mistler has resigned from his position as Executive Director of Student Health and Wellbeing Services (SHWS) here at Humboldt State University. Brian will remain in Humboldt County to serve as Chief Operating Officer of Resolution Care in Eureka. Brian's last day at HSU will be December 9, 2019.

We are grateful to Brian for his service and creativity while working as a part of the HSU community, which included leading his team in the Health and Counseling Centers through completion of a successful three-year re-accreditation from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Brian came to HSU in 2016 as Director of Medical Services, and later took on the role of Executive Director overseeing the SHWS business unit - which consists of Medical Services, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and Health Education. Brian has served on a number of CSU-wide committees including the 23-campus Health Director’s Executive Committee as President-Elect, on the HSU WASC 10-Year Re-Accreditation Steering and Writing Committee.

Brian's efforts to continuously improve the care and services provided to HSU students include expanded services and reduced wait-times for students seeking physical and mental health support through a number of strategic changes. Even as he leaves the SHWS Executive Director role, Brian will continue his relationship with HSU through a number of grants and community partnerships. Brian shared with me, that he is “deeply grateful for the opportunity to have served HSU as a whole and especially to SHWS’s other leaders including Jennifer Slye Moore, Dr. Karen Selin, Dr. Jen Sanford, and Mira Friedman, as well as the entire medical, counseling, and health education team/family; all work tirelessly and passionately each day.  I’ll be cheering for you all wherever I am!”

I would like to personally extend my gratitude to Brian for being a partner and team player during my first few months at HSU.  The health center team will be honoring Brian with a potluck on the 2nd floor of the health center from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Monday December 2nd.  Everyone is invited.

Beginning in December, Student Health and Wellbeing Services will be under the Direction of Dr. Stephen St. Onge, Associate Vice President of Student Success. Stephen's experience, student-first focus, and collaborative approach to ensuring student wellness have prepared him to supervise this area.  Stephen, in partnership with Dr. Karen Selin and Dr. Jen Sanford, will share updates on next steps regarding leadership in this area in January of 2020.  In honoring HSU's commitment to our students, we are looking into opportunities to expand hours and services for students starting the Spring 2020 semester.

Dr. Jason L. Meriwether
Vice President of Enrollment Management
