The first recipients of the Humboldt State Lumberjacks Social Equity & Accountability (SEA) scholarship have been selected. Lumberjack rower Tania Estrada-Rodriguez and men’s soccer player Marco Silveira both stood out with their strong essays and commitment to improving their communities.

“I am incredibly grateful to have been selected for this scholarship and will continue to do my best to be a positive influence within my team and among my peers,” said Silveira.  “It is important to maintain an environment that is safe for everyone.”

“Social equity and accountability to me means providing safe spaces through compassion for the willingness of those that might not have known better, to do better,” noted Estrada.  “Thank you S.E.A Committee for the nomination and thank you to each community that has brought me in with open arms; I only wish to do the same for others.”

This scholarship was initially funded by a generous donation from the Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise. “The intent of the scholarship is to get our student athletes to think critically about their leadership within our department and award scholarship money to help continue their student athlete experience at Humboldt State” SEA committee member, and assistant rowing coach, Ashley Donnell.

This scholarship will continue to be awarded yearly with the support of generous community members. If you would like to help fund this scholarship you can donate here.

Applicants must be a student-athlete on an active/official Humboldt State NCAA Division II athletic team roster at the time of application and must be eligible to compete in the upcoming academic year to receive this award. They were asked to submit a personal statement addressing the following: What does social, equity and accountability mean to you?  How do you demonstrate these principles in your athletic and academic pursuits?  How do they inform your leadership in these domains and beyond?

The two winners were chosen by the S.E.A. Committee.  For more information on S.E.A. go to www.hsujacks.com/sea.
