Employee Peer Educator Program on Sustainability

October 3, 2022

Staff & Faculty at Cal Poly Humboldt are cordially invited to join our first ever Employee Peer Educator Program on Sustainability!

The Sustainability Office is implementing a structured pilot program to bring together a cohort of staff and faculty peer educators who serve as leaders and point people for their area of campus on sustainability issues. Participants will foster improvement and change within their peer group on sustainability topics ranging from issues of waste, energy, transportation, purchasing, water, and environmental justice, among others.

Incentives for participants include $500 to be issued at the completion of the program/school year (taxable per payroll deductions such as medicare and personal withholdings; this will show up as taxable income on W2’s and will not be counted toward retirement calculations), a program sweatshirt or T-shirt, and a monthly catered lunch.

Peer educators will be expected to commit one hour per week minimum to the program via a combination of one-on-one consultation, training lectures, field trips, participation in workshops, focused time to create educational materials, green lunchtimes, implementation of educational material, and deployment of new ideas. Meeting times will be held on Fridays 11am- noon, with additional content offered (attendance optional) Wednesdays noon- 1pm starting on Friday October 14, 2022. Review the full meeting schedule here. Hourly staff employees may opt in or out to Weds noon meeting times since these will happen during the lunch hour.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest to participate in the program to Katie Koscielak, sustainability analyst, at kmk928@humboldt.edu no later than October 7, 2022 (please include "employee educators" in the subject line).

Letters of interest should include:

  • Why do you want to become a sustainability employee peer educator?
  • What are some potential opportunities for improvement you have observed in your department, office, or area of campus?
  • What are some initial ideas you have for change within your peer group and/or office?

Department leads will need to approve a minimum of one hour of release time per week for this work. This approval may be submitted as a letter of support with the initial letter of interest or when not submitted in the initial application, the Sustainability Office will seek this approval before final decisions are made on the participant list.

Learn more about the details of this program here and direct any questions to Katie Koscielak at kmk928@humboldt.edu. Please feel free to share this announcement with any Cal Poly Humboldt staff or faculty member who may be interested in applying to join the program.
