Blue Heron Regatta A Success for HSU Crew

March 26, 2016

EUREKA, Calif. – Humboldt State women's crew successfully hosted its lone home event of the season Saturday morning. In addition to the Lumberjacks, the Blue Heron Regatta also featured teams from California Maritime Academy, Mills College, and Seattle Pacific.

"We felt like today went off very well," said Head Coach Robin Meiggs. "Mother Nature agreed with us. We had really favorable winds, the tide conditions weren't extreme, and the races for the most part pretty much went off with no problems whatsoever. Overall, we were pretty pleased with our performances from Humboldt."

HSU placed first in its first race of the day, the Women's Varsity 8. The white clad Jacks crossed the finish line in 7:20.84, a full 13 seconds faster than Mills. Humboldt State's second boat finished third in the race, crossing at 7:38.91, ahead of fourth-place finishers, Seattle Pacific.

The home crew followed it up in the next race, the second Women's Varsity 8, with a first and second place finishes. The HSU boats came in at 7:38.22 and 7:53.87, with Mills finishing the event in third.

In the first running of the Women's Varsity 4, Humboldt State placed second (7:48.38) and third (7:56.16), just behind Mills' winning time of 7:34.26. Seattle Pacific crossed fourth.

Humboldt State's boats claimed the top two spots in the second Women's Varsity 8, with times of 7:48.56 and 8:22.49, respectively. Third place went to Mills College.

With all four teams competing in the final race, the Women's Novice 4 featured the closest finish of the morning. After Seattle Pacific placed first, Cal Maritime and Humboldt State were neck and neck with the finish line in sight.

"It really is our second race weekend, after doing a lot of scrimmaging over spring break," said Meiggs. "What we saw in today's races is that some of the problems we had in Sacramento kind of reappeared again. I think there are some really good results out there and some ladies who are struggling, but this is pretty normal heading into April. We just can't let up on the training."

The Jacks will return to the road in the upcoming week and compete in San Diego's Crew Classic.
