Call for Equity Advocates AY26/27
Dear Cal Poly Humboldt Community,
The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI), Academic Personnel Services, and Human Resources invite faculty, staff, and administrators to volunteer for our Equity Advocates pool for the 2026–2027 academic year.
Our pool consists of socially conscious community members who serve as essential non-voting partners on hiring search committees. Equity Advocates serve as a resource to promote equitable consideration of all candidates across identity markers, enhancing awareness and consistency throughout the search and deliberation process. By serving, you enable committees to focus on content expertise while mitigating the structural impacts of implicit and unconscious bias. All faculty and administrator searches must include a non-voting Equity Advocate, and advocates can also be assigned to staff searches upon request.
Requirements & Expectations:
Supervisor Support: Interested staff, faculty, and administrators must obtain their direct supervisor's support prior to signing up to ensure service time is accommodated.
Training & Orientation: Complete the "Avoiding Unconscious/Implicit Bias" training module, attend an ODEI Equity Advocate Program orientation session, and review provided program guidelines.
Service: Join search committees as a non-voting resource to observe processes, review evaluation criteria and questions, and offer feedback to foster bias-conscious evaluation.
Acknowledgment: Participants receive a formal letter of service appreciation for their personnel file.
Get Involved: To sign up or express interest in joining the Equity Advocate pool, please click here to register.
Thank you for supporting equitable recruitment, inclusive hiring practices, and institutional excellence at Cal Poly Humboldt!
Warm regards,
Michele Miyamoto, MA, Ed.
