Join Us for National Tsunami Preparedness Week, March 22-30
Dear Cal Poly Humboldt Community,
National Tsunami Preparedness Week is coming up from March 22nd to 30th, and we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on their tsunami safety and awareness. This is a great opportunity to learn more about potential risks, how to stay safe, and the steps you can take in the event of a tsunami.
There are several events happening throughout the week, and the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group has listed them on their website for easy reference: Tsunami Preparedness Week Events. A highlight of the week will be the North Coast Tsunami Drill on Wednesday, March 26th, at 11 AM. We strongly encourage you to participate in the drill to practice the best steps to take in the event of a tsunami. If you are on campus during the drill, think about what actions you would take if you were in coastal or low lying areas, or reflect on your personal emergency plans. This is a great opportunity to practice what you would do if we had another earthquake similar to what we experienced in December 2024 and possible tsunami.
It’s also a good time to remind everyone to determine if you live, work, or play in a tsunami zone and to plan your routes now in case you find yourself in one during the next tsunami on the North Coast. You can check out the tsunami hazard maps here: Tsunami Hazard Maps.
Additionally, we are excited to announce that the university has recently launched the Cal Poly Humboldt SAFE app. This app is designed to provide quick access to safety resources for the community, including easy access to local tsunami hazard maps. Make sure to download it and stay informed. https://humboldt.apparmor.com/clients/humboldt.edu/
Let’s work together to build a safer, more prepared campus and community. Stay tuned for more details and events, and we hope to see you participating in the activities planned for Tsunami Preparedness Week!
Stay safe,
Department of Risk Management, Department of Geology, and The Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group
