Annual Cesar Chavez Day of Service
The annual Y.E.S.-Youth Educational Services Serve-a-Thon is Monday, April 1 from 9:30am to 12:30pm at the Potawot Community Food Garden, located at 3500 Ribeiro Lane in Arcata. Bus transportation will be provided for Cal Poly Humboldt students, staff and faculty. This event is in honor of Cesar Chavez Day, a California State holiday, and serves as a tribute to Chavez’s legacy as a labor leader and civil rights activist who dedicated his life to advocating for farmworkers' rights. The Community Garden is part of United Indian Health Services (UIHS), and provides fresh produce and other healthy food to the many Indigenous families throughout Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity counties who are supported by the program.
The Serve-a-Thon provides an opportunity for students, staff and faculty to give back to the community in a fun and engaging way through various outdoor projects at the Food Garden, such as tending to the native herb garden, caring for the orchard, and more. Rain or shine, participants will come together to make a positive impact against food insecurity while celebrating the spirit of service and solidarity. Collectively, the annual volunteer group is able to contribute over 300 volunteer hours in a single day through this event.
Y.E.S. is proud to partner with UIHS for this event to emphasize the importance of sustainable agriculture and community-based initiatives. This also serve as the finale for the Youth Educational Service’s year-long fundraising efforts and a celebration of the many accomplishments of the 2023-24 school year.
