Update on Search for Chief of University Police

October 12, 2020

After evaluating feedback from the search committee for the next Chief of University Police and other stakeholder groups, I have decided not to select a finalist among the candidates.

This is a critical appointment for the University Police Department (UPD), Administrative Affairs, and the campus community and we determined these candidates did not demonstrate the leadership needed for our campus.

The decision may be disappointing for many of you and I want to assure you that our focus is to ensure we identify dynamic leadership needed for our department and campus.

I will follow up with the campus community on a path forward to find permanent leadership. In the meantime, Chief Scott G. VanScoy is committed to providing interim leadership on the immediate priorities in UPD while engaging in critical campus dialogue on police reform.

Many thanks to co-chairs, administrative support staff and committee for their time, commitment, thought provoking engagement, and extensive work. Thank you to the campus community for your engagement and feedback throughout the process.

Sincerely,

Sherie Cornish Gordon
Chief of Staff & Interim Vice President for Administration & Finance
