Simplifying Phone & Internet charges

October 8, 2020

Effective this fiscal year, Telecommunications and Network Services (TNS) will no longer be charging stateside departments for phone and network connections. This includes monthly service costs, additions (including phone handsets), moves, and changes unless there is a facilities infrastructure charge. Phones will be updated over time, starting with the oldest devices (this may take several years).

This change will reduce workload associated with billing, reconciliation and tracking in most campus departments. Departments will be able to request and receive regular TNS services without having to manage the associated cost.

Previously budgeted amounts in individual departments will be moved to TNS. This will be a base budget move and departments will no longer need to budget for TNS costs. After looking at costs and necessary refresh budgets, it was determined that 5% percent of last year’s TNS costs will remain in each MBU and not be transferred to TNS.

ITS consulted and worked with Administrative Affairs, MBU budget analysts, and the President’s Administrative Team to develop this change.

Details about what is included and excluded can be found in our Service Level Agreement.
