Guidelines and Policies for Student Employment

August 24, 2020

As the fall semester begins, please be aware of important guidelines and policies regarding student employment.

HSU will be hiring student employees for up to 20 hours per week in certain departments. Some job opportunities may not be able to continue due to changes in department operation. If student employees were working on campus in some capacity during the spring semester, they should contact their supervisor to confirm whether that position will be available. Departments should post open student positions on HSU Handshake.

Student employees should also contact their supervisor to determine their specific work responsibilities and, if they are telecommuting, to determine what technology might be necessary to work remotely. Student employees also need to complete the temporary telecommute agreement form by logging into Adobe Sign using their HSU Google Account. HSU’s “COVID-19 Social Distancing Guidelines Course” is required online training for any employee, including student employees, who will be physically working on campus

In response to COVID-19, student employees may be available for leave options if they are affected by the pandemic.  Visit the HR Leave and Disability web page for details, to request forms, and for a chart of leave options.

Student Employee Onboarding
The process of hiring new student employees for Fall 2020 has been streamlined. Approval from Vice Presidents, which was previously required due to budget and COVID-19 responses, is no longer necessary. The process of hiring student assistants may be found on the Student Assistant Sign-up Page.

For students who work on campus, supervisors are expected to complete the Supervisor Checklist for each student employee working on campus. Based on the Supervisor Checklist you may be requested to complete a Job Hazard Analysis Form (JHA) as well. EHS will notify the supervisor if a JHA is necessary.
