Please Take Part in California ShakeOut Drill, Oct. 17
October 15, 2013
Dear Colleagues and Students,
At Humboldt State University, we are serious about the safety of our campus community. That is why I am urging all of you to join me this Thursday, October 17th at 10:17 a.m., in participating in the Great California ShakeOut Drill (http://www.shakeout.org/california/).
I suggest you set your cell phone or watch alarm for 10:17 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17th. At that time, each of us should drop to the ground or floor, cover ourselves by getting under a table or desk (or if outside protect your head with an arm) and hold on for sixty seconds.
To see videos prepared by HSU Geology Professor Lori Dengler about exactly what to do, visit http://www.humboldt.edu/emergencymgmtprogram/shakeout.php. This emergency management website also has good summaries about how to respond in the case of many other emergencies.
There is also a video from California Shakeout designed to be played during the drill. It is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijKGH3WKo3Q tune in to KHSU 90.5 FM radio to hear the recorded message broadcast over the radio.
I am especially concerned that our faculty and others who work with groups of students be prepared to help in the event of an earthquake. Students will take their cues on how to behave from what you do.
Please include information in your syllabi and practice a ShakeOut with students. The Great California ShakeOut occurs each year on the third Thursday in October.
If you have suggestions or ideas about the ShakeOut on our campus, please email shakeout@humboldt.edu.
Thank you for practicing and preparing.
Rollin Richmond, President
