The Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs is pleased to host the following professional development workshop for the month of April. Note that the session is offered twice to accommodate the staffing of our offices.

Title: The American Adolescent: Understanding Today's Youth

Presenter: Dr. Stephen St. Onge, HSU Director of Housing and Residence Life

Description: About 15 years ago, my supervisor suggested a book for me to read. This book was “A Tribe Apart” by Patricia Hersch (1998), where she chronicles a qualitative research project where as she follows a cohort of high school students to better understand their hopes, dreams, fears and the reality of growing up in America. In short, the author informs us that adults are largely unaware of the struggles and stories impacting teens in America. My take-a-way was simple: we need to listen more, listen better, and help find ways to connect young adults to our faculty and staff in meaningful ways. Following this, I have been studying the "American Adolescent" and am eager to share some data on this cohort of students and how we may best impact their learning.
