The following is a letter from Vice Provost Oling-Sisay to HSU faculty about some important impacts of the power shutdown on the academic programs.
 

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

Thank you for all your efforts in supporting our students during the recent PG&E power shutdowns. The events of the last few days have been challenging but the entire campus has worked tirelessly to support our students. Today, we met with the Deans to address (i) the submission of student work assignments, (ii) the thesis deadline date, and (iii) delaying the start of the Spring 2020 class registration period.

Here is the outcome of the discussion:

1. Faculty should allow at least two days after classes resume on 10/31 to require submission of any student work that was due during the period when classes were cancelled.
2. Thesis deadlines are extended by one week (new date December 19 instead of December 12, 2019).
3. The start of the Spring ’20 registration period is being delayed by two days (November 14 instead of November 12 and accordingly, everyone’s’ individual registration date is being moved back two days). This will enable students to obtain academic advising and register for Spring ‘20 classes before the beginning of fall break. The Registrar has made adjustments to accommodate this new registration schedule.

To meet the expectations of our WSCUC accreditation and the US Department of Education, faculty will need to ensure that all students have met the learning outcomes for their courses. To accomplish this, faculty have the flexibility to modify/adapt remaining class sessions to cover material missed during closure. This approach allows HSU to complete the semester with no adjustment to the Fall 2019 academic calendar. Further, any adaptations or changes to course syllabi must be communicated to students as quickly as possible. Students will be encouraged to contact their instructors if they have any questions about specific courses.
Thank you for your patience and collaboration as we continue to manage a very fluid situation with the power shutdowns. It truly has been a community effort and our students appreciate your support and attention to their success this semester.
