Technology Updates You Need To Know About

January 16, 2015

Change in Course Calendar Availability

Google has made changes to their calendaring system, and class schedules can no longer be automatically transferred to all HSU faculty/student Google calendars at the start of each semester as they have in the past. ITS is working on a solution that will enable you to import your own schedule if you wish; this should be available before the end of January, so watch out for a portal announcement about this soon.

Self-Service Password Reset

ITS is deploying new Account Center software! One of the key benefits will be the ability to reset your own passwords – a much quicker and more efficient option than going through the Technology Help Desk. The most convenient method involves a one-time PIN being sent to your cellphone, so now would be a good time to make sure your cellphone number is in PeopleSoft.

To check whether your cellphone number is in PeopleSoft, go to your My Profile pagelet in myHumboldt, click on the Emergency Contacts tab, and scroll down to the Emergency Text Message section. If you need to update the number, just click the link there and follow the onscreen instructions.

Labs & Smart Classrooms

Please remind students to save their work frequently and to log out manually after completing their work session to protect their privacy. All computers in labs and smart classrooms are now configured to automatically log the current user out of the system after 60 minutes of inactivity (defined as no keyboard or mouse interaction). A warning will appear on the screen two minutes before the log-off process is initiated.

If you’re scheduled to use the labs or smart classrooms for instruction this semester, please plan on some time BEFORE your first class to (re)familiarize yourself with the software and equipment. Contact Classroom Technology Services at x3166 as soon as possible to schedule your Technology Training Update session and ensure that your first class runs smoothly. Bring samples of your instructional materials when you come to training, too, so we can make sure we’re covering all the bases.

If you need to check out a particular piece of equipment from Classroom Technology Services, you should reserve it as soon as possible to ensure it will be available when you need it. If it’s something you’re not too familiar with, schedule an orientation session as well when you make the reservation.

Don’t forget that if you need specific software for Smart Classroom or Lab use, you must re-request it ahead of each academic session. The summer deadline is May 11, and the fall deadline is June 1. See http://www.humboldt.edu/its/labs-softwarerequests for more on how to do this.
