Research Experiences for Undergraduates: Sustainable Groundwater Resources

January 20, 2021

Please share this exciting 'Research Experience for Undergraduates' (REU) opportunity with any potentially interested students!

San Francisco State University (SFSU) and the California State University (CSU) system offers a 9-week REU across California. Students collaborate with research mentors at host CSU campuses to develop projects that address groundwater and surface water sustainability.

Participating students will receive a research stipend of $5,400 for the Summer 2021 REU: Sustainable Groundwater Resources.

Application Deadline: March 1, 2021

Program Dates: June 7 – August 6, 2021

REU Objectives: The overarching goal of the REU Site is to provide genuine research experience and training in groundwater hydrology and related hydrologic sciences and engineering for undergraduate students, particularly women and under-represented minority (URM) students, at an early stage in their careers. Our research program will advance the science of groundwater sustainability and address the global groundwater crisis, with particular focus on SGMA in California. The primary objectives of our REU are:

  • To provide junior- and senior-level undergraduates the opportunity to engage in independent research and make original intellectual contributions.
  • To provide community based research experience and professional development opportunities that create an engaged workforce in hydrologic sciences and engineering.
  • To expand the participation and increase the retention of women and URM students in STEM.
  • To integrate cutting-edge research and training about groundwater sustainability science, particularly related to California’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA).
  • To provide a framework for productive collaboration between interdisciplinary Research Mentors and undergraduates across the CSU system.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled in a two-year or four-year institution of higher education. Preference is given to students who are rising Sophomores or Juniors. Students from underrepresented groups and institutions with limited research opportunities are especially encouraged to apply.
