A message from Interim Dean Benavides-Garb

September 13, 2021

We continue making progress in a number of college-wide initiatives mentioned and described in our last communication of August 23. Please feel free to discuss these initiatives with your respective chairs and program leaders.

  • Strategic college alignment with the Academic Affairs Division goals and priorities (Lead: Chairs’ ad hoc committee, Heather Madar). We still need a couple more volunteers for this committee. Anyone interested in/willing to serve on this committee during the fall please contact Heather.

  • Development of new Student Learning Communities (Lead: Maxwell Schnurer)

  • Implementation of college-level outreach and student recruitment (Lead: David Heise)

  • New Curriculum and Program Development (Lead: Heather Madar)

  • Implementation of college-level communication plan to best serve our college community (Leads: Ryan Rasmussen and Shannon Collart)

College Communication Plan

Soon, we would like to conduct a virtual college-wide meeting to report and discuss with our college community our most relevant initiatives. Tentatively, we are planning to meet on: Thursday, September 30th from 3:00 to 4:30 PM. Please mark your calendars, a link will be forthcoming.

In addition, as part of our communication plan, we will begin virtual program-level and/or administrative unit-level visits. We hope to have a chance to meet, share, and listen to the questions and suggestions you may have. We have already scheduled 5 visits, please follow up with your Chair.

Also, remember that you have access to our college-wide google drive titled, “CAHSS Group Communications Drive,” where you will find relevant information related to your programs, our college, and university at large.

Don’t forget to post announcements regarding events, opportunities, and special occasions to the myHumboldt portal at https://pmc.humboldt.edu/node/add/portal

Grant Opportunities

Let me repeat what Shannon said in a prior email message that one of the Dean's Office priorities this academic year and beyond is to establish more of a grant culture in CAHSS. Here are some upcoming internal and external funding opportunities to consider:

AY 2021/22 Space Request Process

The University Space and Advisory Committee (USFAC) is currently accepting space requests directly from Colleges/Major Budget Units. Part of the space request process is to first confer with the Dean/MBU Lead re: space needs and, if needed, have a consultation with the Planning, Design & Construction team from Facilities Management. If a department/program has space needs, please schedule a meeting with Shannon Collart and myself to discuss and we work together to submit a space request. The deadline for space requests to USFAC is October 6th. Please refer to the Space Requests webpage for more information.

CAHSS Budget Analyst Position

We have just constituted the search committee for the College Budget Analyst position and the search paperwork has been submitted to the Provost for approval. René Smith is assisting the Dean’s Office with the budget analyst duties until we can secure a new hire.

COVID Funding/Budget Request

We have some limited funds to assist with COVID needs. Chairs have a form to request funding. Please submit requests by Sep 24, 2021.

In closing, please remember that you have direct access to each member of our office team: Shannon Collart, René Smith, Ryan Rasmussen, Dave Heise, and Heather Madar. Particularly take advantage of the ADFs and Interim Dean’s virtual office hours presented to you in our prior message.

Deans Virtual Office Hours, fall 2021:

We are all thankful for all you do to foster and support our students' success. Please let us know how we can best support you. Muchas gracias,

Sincerely,

¡Sí se puede! ¡Avanzar!

Rosamel
