CSUBIOTECH, Presidents' Commission Scholars Program for Undergraduates

Award Amount: $8,000

New Deadline: Tuesday, February 20, 2024 by 5pm PST

The California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology (CSUBIOTECH) is a network of faculty, deans, and presidents, whose work champions biotechnology innovation. The CSUBIOTECH team administers grant and award programs that are open to CSU faculty and students. Faculty and students in all disciplines related to biotechnology— including, but not limited to, life sciences, physical sciences, math, agricultural science, engineering and/or business—are encouraged to apply.

ABOUT: CSUBIOTECH recognizes that research experience is critical to engaging and graduating students interested in biotechnology careers. The focus of this program is to increase the number of lower-division undergraduate students who have access to a full-time research experience. The Presidents’ Commission Scholars program aims to support up to 11 CSU undergraduate scholars during Summer 2024. Students will conduct biotechnology-related laboratory-, field-, clinic- or community-based research for the first time. Sponsoring faculty mentors will receive funding to support their research program.

The award amount is $8,000. Students will receive $6000 of the award as a scholarship that may be used for living expenses, tuition, fees, books or other allowable academic expenses. $2000 of the award can support the faculty mentor’s research program.

ELIGIBILITY: The program is open to first-year or second-year CSU students and first-year incoming transfer students from a non-four-year institution. Students must be in good standing at the time the proposal is submitted and remain at their CSU campus for at least one additional academic term after the last semester of the research experience.

Have no prior industry, community college or university level research experience, including previous or existing funding, support, or academic credit received for a research experience. CSUBIOTECH views lab volunteers and work-study students as engaged members of a research group.
