Black Liberation Month Begins in February
The African American Center for Academic Excellence (AACAE), in collaboration with multiple campus and community partners, is currently planning a vast array of events and activities for the upcoming Black Liberation Month. This year’s theme is Mapping Our Routes to Liberation. “There is no one route to achieving liberation; the liberation of our communities requires a multifaceted approach. This month the Center will offer tools, insights and strategies to achieve personal and communal liberation in academia and in greater society,” say Douglas Smith, AACAE Coordinator.
This year’s events include five dynamic featured speakers who’s topics range from ways digital media impact our lives and intersects with issues of race, gender, culture, and technology to food sovereignty for Black and Brown peoples, and much more.
Our first guest speaker is Dr. Safiya Noble, the author of the highly acclaimed Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism (NYU Press) which was a New York Public Library 2018 Best Book for Adults and recognized by Bustle as one of “10 Books about Race to Read Instead of Asking a Person of Color to Explain Things to You”. Register for her Zoom presentation, Thursday, Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m., here link.humboldt.edu/Algorithms
The campus will also welcome Dr. Kyle Boone followed by Leah Penniman (Li*/Ya/She/He), author of Farming While Black—a love song for the earth and her peoples. HSU is also pleased to host Ja'Net Adams whose presentation is titled “Going Deeper Than Google: How the history of black wealth can help close the racial wealth gap of today,” and Dr. Nina Ellis Harvey that has geared her presentation to self-identified Black women, women of color, health and wellness, and self-love.
The African American Center for Academic Excellence and campus and community partners look forward to sharing this curated month of Black Culture with you.
